Professor Nicholas C Vella will be discussing the multi-volume edition of the unpublished writings of Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini (1895-1936) in the next Saturday morning lecture taking place at Il-Hagar Museum.
Prof Vella’s colleague in this was Andrea Pessina, with whom he in fact discovered in Rome this “lost” material in the year 2000.
Pessina and Vella succeeded in collecting and completing Ugolini’s ambitious study of prehistoric Malta, interrupted by his untimely pre-War death.
Besides the three volumes this Mussolini-funded scholar envisaged with his photos and notes, a companion volume locates his ideas in the scholarship of his day and in the light of later studies.
“Malta Antica” is published by Midsea Books as a thousand-page set but Professor Vella, who has been lecturing in archaeology at Malta University since 1999, will here be concentrating on the prehistoric remains in Gozo.
