Seabird species face many threats, and BirdLife Malta said that the Scopoli’s Shearwater is no exception.
The NGO stressed that light pollution during the crucial time of fledging could cause them to get disorientated and end up stranded, where they are in danger of dying due to starvation or predation.
BirdLife Malta said that it relies on the public to be its eyes on Malta and Gozo’s coastline at this time of the year, and to contact BirdLife Malta on 2134 7645 (office hours)/7925 5697 (evenings and weekends) should they find a stranded seabird.
“With the support of our seabird team and vet, we check the bird’s health before releasing it to continue its journey to sea,” it said.
