Financial support for over 60s employing carer of their choice

Financial support for over 60s employing carer of their choiceThe Government said that it is offering financial support to those individuals aged 60 and over who employ a carer of their choice to help them with their everyday needs.

This is being made possible through the Carer at Home Scheme and applies in Gozo and Malta.

In order for a carer to be eligible for this service, one needs a recognised qualification by the MQRIC in nursing or care giving at level 2 or higher.

Every applicant is assessed to make sure that this scheme is provided to who really needs it.

The Department of Active Ageing and Community Care said that so far since 2016, 1,635 persons benefitted from this scheme and presently 865 elderly persons are benefitting from this scheme.

In 2023 the budget allocated for this scheme amounted to €5,000,000 whilst for 2023 €8,000,000 have been allocated.

As from January, those employing a full-time carer will have their subsidy increased from €7,000 to €8,000 per year. Those employing a carer for less than 40 hours per week, the subsidy will be awarded pro rata.

The beneficiaries are to receive financial assistance as from the approval of the application, the Department said.

Individuals interested in applying for this service are to submit a completed application including a signed medical report from the family doctor, together with a copy of the carer’s qualification, a copy of the employment contract as authorised from the notary public, and an official document from Jobplus or Identità (for third country nationals) which indicates that the carer is employed with the applicant on a regular basis.

A friend complained that doctors refused to operate on his knees because they were not in a grave situation. They only operate on those who really needs the intervention. Wouldn’t it be prevention and also save the person from future pain? Same with carers. They are given to those ‘who really needs them’ we all know that loneliness is the main killer. Having to take out the garbadge, take the right medicine at the right time. Have a brisk walk. I would love to have a carer with me so I will not rapidly find myself degraded into a needy old man.
