The “extensive modernisation” of Nadur Primary School through an investment of of more than €6.3 million, has now been inaugurated, the Government said today.
In this school year, the Government said that 200 students and approximately 30 educators have been able to enjoy a modern educational environment, financed under the NextGenerationEU Programme through the Recovery and Resilience Plan for Malta.
A two-storey building that was built at the beginning of the 20th century, was given a completely new look and modernised to meet today’s educational needs.
The inauguration was carried out by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Funds Chris Fearne, Education Minister Clifton Grima and Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri.
Minister Chris Fearne said that, “one of the priorities of the Facility for Recovery and Resilience is that large buildings, including public ones, in Malta have the necessary work done to make efficient use of energy. The works at the Nadur school in Gozo, which were financed by the same facility, led to this goal being reached and therefore this school, apart from now offering a nicer and more modern environment to the students and the teachers, it is also much more efficient in the use of energy.”
Minister Clifton Grima spoke about the unprecedented investment being made in the educational infrastructure through the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS).
Minister Clint Camilleri explained that “during the last year all the work was undertaken without the need for any student to move to schools in other localities. We divided the work into different phases and completed it while the children were able to continue in lessons.”
In addition to the extensive work carried out on both the interior and exterior of the school, the project included the redesign of open and recreational spaces, as well as the creation of new spaces for teaching extracurricular subjects, including a dance studio, music room, literacy room, theatre studio, and art classes.
The project also addressed the accessibility of the building, and energy efficiency.
It was explained that the school has now also become almost carbon neutral, the use of renewable energy has increased, and the demand for energy has been reduced by at least 30%.
Part of the project included the installation of new services, including lighting, water, drainage, CCTV, internet connection, alarms, and fire safety services.
Also present for this inauguration were the Chief Executive of the FTS Dr. Neville Young, the Principal of Gozo College Sean Zammit, and the Head of School Mary Jane Camilleri.
