Gozo blood donation session Tuesday, O+ blood needed

The National Blood Transfusion Service has advised that the O Positive blood group is gradually decreasing and is reminding Gozitans that there will blood donation session on Tuesday, all blood groups are needed.

Red cell units can only be stored for 42 days. This is why they continually appeal for regular blood donations.

Each blood donation made can help save three lives. The NBTS said less than 5% of the eligible population actually takes the time to donate blood – Just 3 out of 100 people. “In which percentage do you fall?”

Did you know that every 5 minutes someone in hospital needs blood: Children undergoing cancer treatments; Patients having surgery; Mothers facing childbirth complications; People with blood disorders, like Thalassaemia; Individuals with traumatic injuries.

The NBTS stressed that the list could go on… “your help is needed to ensure hospitals have an adequate blood stock for patients in need.”

The Service continues to encourage Gozitans to please keep attending donation sessions to help the patients in need get the necessary blood in a timely manner.

The next session in Gozo will be, Tuesday, the 19th of March, from 8am until 1pm, at the Xewkija Community Clinic.
