Another 20 immigrants who had arrived in Malta irregularly have now been relocated to other European Union member states.
The Interior Ministry said that the relocation exercise was carried out in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA).
In a statement, the Ministry explained that “this is a continuing exercise of relocation to other Member States of immigrants who arrived irregularly in Malta. This relocation was done through the Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism.”
The Ministry stated that “while those immigrants who deserve protection will be helped and given all their rights according to the law, those immigrants who do not deserve protection, or who are living in Malta irregularly, are being returned to their country of origin.
The work of the Immigration Police, the Detention Services Agency and other departments within the Ministry for the Interior, will continue in this regard, it said.
The relocation was co-financed by the European Union, under the Asylum, Immigration and Integration Fund (AMIF).??
