Gozo Chamber echoes President’s words on ”the need for maturity and serenity”

Gozo Chamber echoes President's words on ''the need for maturity and serenity''The Gozo Business Chamber, in a statement on Tuesday, echoed the words of President Myriam Spiteri Debono last week ”with respect to the events happening in our country.”

The Chamber said that it believes that the President’s words are ”both opportune and timely given the circumstances we are living.”

It stressed that, ”prudence, caution, and the environment of serenity in which our institutions need to operate, are three fundamental ingredients so that the situations that our country is experiencing, are faced with maturity, and so that justice is done with all the parties concerned.”

The Chamber said it believes that ”maturity should be exercised in all that is said, especially in the political sphere. Everyone who expresses a position should feel the responsibility that what is being said has a significant impact on the whole of society.”

The Gozo Business Chamber concluded by saying that ”Malta’s legislative framework provides various remedies. Consequently, the judiciary should be left to do its work in a serene way. It is only then that an environment of serenity, which will enable justice to be done with all the parties concerned, can be created.”

In her statement last week the President remarked that ”the times our nation is living through at present calls for reticence and caution. Prudence has to be exercised in the choice of words spoken; emotions should not rule our heads. Such behaviour only serves to cloud the reasoning faculties.

”The exercise of prudence is of utmost importance; it is necessary that situations are given time to develop.

”Our laws provide remedies in those cases where individuals feel subjected to prejudice. This also includes instances where individuals consider they have been discriminated against, and deprived of their legitimate rights.

”Legal remedies also exist if legal processes are in some way vitiated.

”The present situations essentially require that all institutions, but particularly the courts and the judiciary, can exercise their functions in a serene atmosphere,” she said.

The President concluded by saying that ”a calm and serene atmosphere is beneficial to all parties involved, or somehow impacted.”
