Transparent black waste bags mandatory from Monday

As from next Monday, the 1st of July, transparent black bags will become mandatory ^[1] instead of the current opaque black bags for municipal waste collection

The Environment and Resources Authority said that this will make it easier for enforcement officials to check the content of bags without opening them.

ERA officials and other enforcement officers will be continuing inspections across Malta and Gozo, to ensure that households and businesses are separating waste properly in the three waste bags specified by law.

Enforcement officers are authorised by law to check bags taken out for collection by households and businesses, and to issue warnings and fines when waste items are found in the wrong bag.

The transparent black bags have been on sale in supermarkets and shops for some time.

ERA warned that whoever is caught disposing of waste incorrectly will be fined €75 for businesses and €25 for households. These fines will double to €150 and €50 respectively if the individual is caught repeatedly disposing of waste inappropriately.
