This year, MaltaPost has again joined members of the Euromed Postal Joint Stamp Project in the issue of a new set of stamps bearing a common theme – Sports in the Mediterranean.’
The two MaltaPost stamps feature traditional Maltese sport activities, specifically horse racing in Malta and the brilli game in Gozo.
Horse racing has a tradition in Malta that generates excitement and joy to many. It is a family pastime passed down generations. The €0.38 stamp shows a horse and jockey speeding down a racetrack.
The rider is Angelo Agius (1920-2017), known as “Il-Gen?,” a veteran Maltese jockey and horse owner from Qormi.
The second stamp, bearing a denomination of €2.00, shows a group of three adults enjoying an outdoor game of brilli, a local version of skittles unique to the island of Gozo.
This set will be issued in a sheet of 10 stamps, with each stamp measuring 44mm x 31mm, with a comb perforation of 13.9 x 14.0 and bearing the Maltese Cross watermark. The sheets measure 185mm x 118mm and were produced by Printex Ltd in the offset process.
The issue consists of 500,000 of the €0.38 stamp and 30,000 of the €2.00 stamp. The stamps will be available from all Post Offices in Malta and Gozo from Monday, the 8th of July 2024.
