Gozo Citadel features on new €2 commemorative coin and silver coin

A €2 commemorative coin and a silver coin, both with the theme of the Citadel have been issued by the Central Bank of Malta.

During the launch, Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri thanked the leadership of the Central Bank of Malta for this initiative where it chose the Citadel as the first site, with the theme of Maltese fortified cities, to appear on the €2 coin.

“The massive investment made to restore the Citadel to the glory it deserves has really paid off. This was also appreciated by the European Union itself as back in 2022 when this restoration and regeneration project won the RegioStars Awards,” said the Minister.Gozo Citadel features on new €2 commemorative coin and silver coin“Every effort is being made so that the Citadel continues to be enjoyed and becomes more recognised. It was precisely for this reason that the Ministry accepted the invitation of the Central Bank of Malta and now we are launching these two coins which will continue to raise the prestige of this old city in the heart of Gozo,” concluded Minister Camilleri.

Alexander Demarco, Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Malta said that every year, the Bank issues two commemorative coins and therefore it was appropriate that the Citadel should appear on this coin.

As a country we should really be proud of the heritage we embrace and I call for it to continue to be preserved, conserved and passed on to future generations,” said the Acting Governor.

During the evening Rev. Dr. Joseph Bezzina, historian, gave an insight into the Citadel over the years.
