We should study the need for alternative maritime access to Gozo – Borg

The Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg, has highlighted, what he described as “the vulnerability of Gozo’s only connection with Malta.” He stressed that “we should study the need for an alternative maritime access to Gozo, especially when we consider the maritime congestion.”.

The MP was referring to the two bomb threats on Friday and Saturday on Gozo Channel vessels, which also affected fast ferry services as Mgarr Port was closed.

Although services were restored as quickly as possible after thankfully turning out to be negative bomb threats, they still caused chaos on the roads and long delays.

Writing on social media, Alex Borg said, “while I thank the Armed Forces and the emergency services for the performance of their duty, I believe that we should prepare short and long term plans for situations like this.”

The PN MP went on to say that “in an immediate way, we can consider ‘safe passage’ from an alternative place for emergency cases such as medical need or travel, perhaps with the help of the army.”

“In the long term, we should study the need for an alternative maritime access to Gozo, especially when we consider the maritime congestion,” he said.

The Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo concluded by saying that “it is important to look forward to solutions that strengthen our connectivity.”
