In 2022, foreign-controlled enterprises contributed 43.6% of the total value added and accounted for 2.8% of business units in the non-financial business economy, the National Statistics Office said.
The NSO noted that foreign control was most intensive in the gambling and betting activities domain, accounting for 47.5% of the business units and 92.9% of the value added generated.
Residents of European countries controlled 73.7% of foreign enterprises in Malta, with EU Member States controlling 46.7% of such business units, the NSO said.
It also found that foreign affiliates controlled by Maltese residents generated the equivalent of €1.4 billion in net turnover and employed 14,834 persons across 51 countries worldwide.
