Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela has visited the ongoing work related to the geotechnical studies for the new hospital construction project in Gozo.
He explained that the Gozo General Hospital redevelopment project has reached “an important milestone” with the commencement of geotechnical studies on the site.
The Minister added that, “these studies are a critical component of the master planning process, providing essential technical information to guide the design and construction phases of the project.”
Abela said that as part of the ambitious development project, the new hospital will have a modern acute care building, a dedicated rehabilitation facility, and a larger parking lot. He reiterated that the phased approach to construction will ensure continuity of essential medical services throughout the redevelopment.
“This is another promise of the Government that we are witnessing the initial phase of these days. This project aims to position the Gozo General Hospital as a healthcare hub that meets the needs of the community and visitors alike,” concluded Minister Abela.
Project engineer James Grima explained how through these geotechnical investigations, the physical and mechanical properties of the soil and rocks will be assessed. This while the same survey offers insights into the stability of the ground, its load-bearing capacity, and potential environmental considerations. This information will inform the structural design of the new facilities, ensuring the safety, durability, and efficiency of the planned hospital building.

The hospital is closely surrounded by residential houses. At present there is a private block being built and the shouting of the workers to each other and to the crane operator and even talking on the phone apart from construction noises are exhausting to say the least, to us the surrounding neighbours. I pray that this planned building of a new hospital will take the least of time to complete. I am confident this will be one of the primary consideration and I congratulate the Minister Jo Etienne Abela for all the great work he is doing for our health.
