A survey carried out on ICT usage and e-commerce in enterprises across Malta and Gozo during 2024 has revealed that the majority (97.9%) of enterprises with at least 10 employees used the internet.
This data released by the National Statistics Office also shows that a total of 82,254 employees used the internet for business purposes during 2024. Construction, and Wholesale and Retail Trade activities were the economic activity groups with the lower shares of internet usage among all enterprises
91.2% of enterprises have remote access to their own systems. The NSO noted that almost all of these enterprises enabled remote access to the organisation’s email system whereas nine out of every 10 provided employees with access to documents.
The survey also revealed that this surge in remote access increased the enterprises’ exposure to ICT-related security incidents. To counteract such incidents, 93.9% of enterprises implemented some form of ICT security measures on their own ICT systems.
The most common security measures were authentication via strong passwords (90.5%) along with the creation of data backups in separate locations (83.8%).
The national share of enterprises conducting sales through e-commerce was almost 11 percentage points higher than the EU-27 average.
