Rock thrown into manhole causes sewage overflow near Gozo dive site

Inspections by a Water Services Corporation team found that a sewer manhole that was overflowing near to a diving site at Xatt l-Ahmar in Gozo had been tampered with and opened manually, “a stone had been deliberately dropped inside, causing a blockage.”

A second team was deployed by the WSC to fully remove the obstruction and restore normal flow. It said that “given the stone’s size, it could not have entered the system through the sewage pipes, nor does it seem to have become dislodged from inside the manhole. All indications point to this being an intentional act.”

The WSC warned that “tampering with the sewer system is illegal and can cause serious damage to our wastewater network, leading to disruptions.”

A police report on this incident has been filed by the WSC, and investigations are underway.

The WSC reminded the public of the importance of “abiding by the law related to discharge into the sewer system, to ensure that our wastewater network operates smoothly.”

The Water Services Corporation thanked the team for their swift response in resolving the issue.
