The organisers have announced that registrations are open for this year’s 50th edition of Il-Girja t’Ghawdex, which will be taking place on Sunday, the 27th of April.
Run Gozo, or Il-Girja t’Ghawdex, is the main athletic event in Gozo, attracting participants from around the globe, the organisers said. “The event is by far the largest and longest-standing athletic event in Gozo, attracting hundreds of local and foreign athletes.”
The event features a variety of races to suit all levels of fitness and interest, including a half marathon, 10k and 5k races, 10k and 5k walkathons, a family 2k fun run, and 2k and 900m kids races.
Both the half marathon and 10K routes are AIMS certified, and Athletics Malta has awarded the race a ‘Gold Label’ status.
Run Gozo sees its origins in 1977, where a group of youths attending the Xaghra Youth Centre organised the very first edition. The organisers said, “fast forward to 2025, and the Run Gozo event we see today is still run by a dedicated group of volunteers who share a common goal: to deliver a unique Il-Girja t’Ghawdex experience for every single participating athlete. The team’s mission is to promote a healthy lifestyle and celebrate the rich culture and beauty of Gozo.”
The half marathon and 10K routes have been meticulously designed to showcase the very best of Gozo. “While running, athletes will be immersed in the island’s rich culture, history, and natural beauty, passing iconic landmarks such as Cittadella, tas-Salvatur Hill, Xaghra Square, Xwejni, Qbajjar Salt Pans, Ta’ Pinu Shrine, and many more.”
Applications for the 2025 edition are open at https://www.rungozo.org/ [1]. Normal application fees apply until the 6th of April.
Run Gozo said that the event’s main sponsors are Teamsport, Diadora, Ministry for Gozo and Planning, GasanMamo Insurance, Bay Radio, Xaghra Local Council, Visit Malta, San Michel, Gatorade and Kind’s Auto Sales Ltd.
