Update – I’m writing to share some wonderful news!
Since contacting you and asking you to publish details regarding this matter, welfare officials have now visited the pony, and it has been moved to sheltered accommodation – likely pending further investigation. The officials took photographs and made notes during their visit.
I’m incredibly relieved and happy to be returning to the UK tomorrow, knowing that this little pony is finally receiving the protection and care it deserves.

I arrived in Gozo on holiday on 18th April, and since then, I have been seriously concerned about the welfare of a Shetland Pony confined in a cage directly opposite the Cesca Boutique Hotel in Xlendi.
The enclosure, approximately 9ft by 9ft, is far too small to allow for any meaningful movement or exercise. Even more alarming, the animal has no shelter whatsoever from the elements.
The pony receives no interaction – just a few minutes in the morning and evening when the water is refilled. The rest of the time, day and night, it remains alone, confined to the cage.
On at least two occasions, I’ve noticed the water bucket had been kicked over, leaving it without even that basic necessity.
I reported this matter to Eco-Gozo, who subsequently referred it to Animal Welfare at MAFA-AHWD. Despite this, I have received no acknowledgement, and the pony remains trapped in the same inhumane conditions.
This situation requires urgent intervention. I strongly urge the relevant authorities to act immediately to ensure the animal receives adequate care, space, and protection.
Frankly, this level of neglect would not be tolerated in the UK. I am shocked by the lack of urgency and accountability shown by the responsible bodies in Gozo. As a visitor, I had expected a higher standard of animal welfare enforcement.
While I’m unsure of your ability to escalate this, I appeal to you out of concern for the animal and the broader impression this situation leaves on tourists.
