GTA and EP TRAN Committee discuss tourism and inter-island connectivity

The Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) had a meeting with the delegation from the Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) of the European Parliament, held at il-Hagar Museum in Victoria.

The GTA provided a brief overview of the Gozitan tourism sector highlighting the profile of the visitors to the island. The Association also expressed its views on the need of continuous improvements in the inter-island connectivity, including additional and alternative porting facilities both in Gozo and Cirkewwa, the building of the fourth ferry, as well as improvements on the road network leading to Mgarr harbour.

Both delegations exchanged opinions in addressing unbalanced tourism and its effects and overcoming seasonality through sustainable tourism strategy.

The one size fits all effect on tourism in Gozo was also raised and highlighted. Other matters discussed covered fair level playing field on accommodation booking platforms as well as the issue of human resources within the Gozitan tourism sector.

The TRAN Delegation was led by the Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Lithuanian MEP Virginijus Sinkevicius and included Irish MEP Nina Carberry (EPP) Spanish MEP Elena Nevado Del Campo (EPP) Portugese MEP Sergio Goncalves (S&D), Maltese MEP Daniel Attard (S&D) and French MEP Arash Saeidi (The Left).

The GTA Delegation was led by Paul Scicluna (GTA Chairman) and included Joe Muscat (GTA CEO) and Ludgard Gatt (GTA Council Member).
