Gozo Ministry launches eco-Gozo vision themed calendar

New eco-Gozo vision themed calendar launchedMore than four thousand students attending state and church, primary and secondary schools, around Gozo will be given calendars with themes related to the eco-Gozo vision, which have been issued by the Ministry for Gozo. This is another initiative undertaken as part of an awareness campaign on the government’s vision to make Gozo an ecological island.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, visited two primary schools in Gozo, which have been given the first sets of calendars designed to deliver messages related to the concept of the eco-Gozo vision. These calendars, addressed to children attending primary schools, with ages between 5 and 10 years, include good practices that children should engage in daily to live a better life.

Besides this calendar, there are another two types of calendars featuring different messages, their main purpose is to promote sustainable development: one for students of secondary schools and another for the more adult public. The coloured calendars with pictures and photographs, were printed so that each page can be detached and used as a bookmark.

These calendars will also be distributed in special schools within the Gozo College, as well as other institutions of learning on the island.

During the presentation of the calendars, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, explained how the calendars are designed to create awareness about good practices for sustainable development among children, youths and adults in Gozo. She explained the importance of the need for increased awareness about good practices that help them become more aware of what is the Government’s vision on Gozo. The vision will lead to improvements in Gozo as a whole. “To do this requires the collaboration of al,” added the Minister.

With all due respect to Giovanna Debono, the Gozo Ministry and the Maltese Government as a whole I think this eco-Gozo vision is being approached in the totally wrong way. Children do not learn about environmental awareness by being given a little calendar. Surely the best way to teach children about the ‘Government’s vision on Gozo’ is to actually be seen to do be doing something tangible in support of that vision.

What message does it send to children when they see members of the Government damaging the very environment they say they care so much about for no other reason than personal gain? What message do these children get when they go on a school trip to Dwejra and see the beautiful view from the top of the hill spoiled by an ugly rusted concrete shell?

In what way does it enhance the eco-Gozo vision when children learn that the very people handing them little calendars are considering the destruction of Hondoq Bay by the construction of a marina? Does it give these children hope in the future when they see NGO’s being attacked in the press by Government members and supporters for committing the sin of trying to protect the environment and heritage of Malta for future generations?

Talking the talk is something that all politicians are good at, however they usually fall well short of expectations when it comes to walking the walk.

Mr Tyrrell, in Gozo we cannot believe these publicity stunts anymore .

May I add, what about the destruction that the Nadur Cemetry will cause to the surrounding water supply. Isn`t this Eco Gozo ?

What about Xerri`s complex?

I am sorry to say I do not believe in ECO gozo .

It is nothing more than a BUZZ WORD that the minister managed to grab it before Dr Chris Said and she is certainly doing her best to take advantage of it.

A calendar is nice to look at it all year round.

Did the Minister of Gozo print pictures of the Nadur environment and it’s agricultural land? Did she mention the new huge Nadur cemetery, on top of an aquifer used by the Nadur Farmers, that will destroy more than 100 “tumoli” of fertile agricultural land ?

Furthermore, not only will this project destroy the aquifer; it will contaminate it forever with chemical leaks coming from dead bodies. I bet she didn’t mention anything about this, as it is happening in Nadur, HER OWN VILLAGE!
