Vascular Hybrid Theatre begins operations at Mater Dei Hospital

A new Vascular Hybrid Theatre, built with an investment of €2.7 million, has begun operations and is crucial for patients who require interventions in the arteries and veins. This was announced by the Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela

Minister Abela explained how this advanced device allows professionals to see arteries in various parts of the patient’s body without the need to open up part of the patient.

He said that this will help to carry out many more interventions with much better results and with fewer complications for the patient.

This theatre will also be crucial for carrying out interventions in emergencies and traffic accidents that require intervention on arteries that have been hit or even torn during an accident.

“This theatre not only contains the tools to perform certain normal interventions, but also contains sophisticated equipment where interventions can be performed through the patient’s leg through a small hole,” explained Dr Abela.

He continued by saying that through this theatre, the patient is being operated on with greater precision and the patient’s life is being protected more. Therefore, after the intervention, the patient will be able to return home in a short time without having to spend days or even weeks hospitalised at Mater Dei Hospital.

The Minister also mentioned that where previously it was not always possible for vulnerable patients to undergo an intervention, now through this theatre they will be offering hope to these patients.

The Health Minister concluded that, “today we can say that we have the best care for arteries and veins in our country. Over 20 patients have already been successfully operated on in this theatre and it is certain that it will help thousands of patients benefit from this investment. The Government is committed to continuing to invest in equipment so that the professional can move the service forward for the benefit of the patient.”
