The launch of three services that together help and improve the quality of life of people living with Type 1 diabetes in Malta and Gozo, has been announced Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela.
Minister Abela explained how with an investment of €1.4 million, a ‘Tandem t:slim x2’ insulin pump will be provided free of charge, which works in synergy with the CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitors) already provided, which will offer insulin therapy automatically and constantly.
The second launch is that of a multi-disciplinary insulin pump clinic at the Censu Moran Centre, with a new team of well-trained professionals. The third measure is the establishment of a contact centre that operates 24/7 and will offer advice and assistance related to this equipment.
Dr Abela said that from today this service is being offered to patients aged 18 and under, as well as to patients who develop diabetes after surgery to remove the total pancreas. In the coming months the service will be extended to cover all patients with Type 1 Diabetes.
An identical service will also be launched by the Gozo General Hospital for Gozitan patients in the coming days.
