Sustainability must be understood not only as economic opportunity but also as an ethical responsibility – Borg

The ‘Giving Better 2026 – Annual Conference & Impact Fair’ organised by the Academy of Givers, brought together stakeholders to reflect on how they can collectively “give better” – ensuring that economic activity delivers ”meaningful and lasting value for society.”

During a panel discussion on sustainability and competitiveness, Daniel Borg, CEO of the Gozo Business Chamber, contributed a Gozo-specific perspective, emphasising that sustainability must be understood not only as an economic opportunity, but also as an ethical responsibility.

He said that from this perspective, sustainability is not solely about improving efficiency or reducing environmental impact. It is about ensuring that development:

contributes to the long-term wellbeing of the community

makes responsible use of limited resources

supports a more balanced and resilient economic model

Particular emphasis was placed on the link between mobility, connectivity and sustainability. Borg said that ”for an island economy such as Gozo, accessibility is a key economic driver – but it must be developed in a way that is both efficient and responsible.”

The discussion also highlighted that while opportunities exist – including better utilisation of renewable energy and more sustainable mobility solutions – these must be guided by a broader shift in mindset.

It was noted that ”businesses have a central role to play. They are not only economic operators – they are leaders within the community.”

As highlighted during the intervention, businesses must move beyond compliance and ask fundamental questions:

What is our role in society?

Are we contributing to the common good?

Are we creating long-term value, or short-term gain?

The discussion also noted that when businesses embrace this role, they move from being market participants to becoming community leaders, setting standards through responsible and sustainable practices.

It found that in this context, sustainability becomes a key pillar of competitiveness – not only in economic terms, but also in terms of credibility, trust, and long-term value creation.
