1919 Sette Giugno riots commemoratinNext month, Gozo will be commemorating the 107th anniversary of the events of Sette Giugno, during a ceremony in Xaghra to mark the 7th of June 1919 riots.

There will be a Mass at at the Basilica Church of the Virgin Mary for the souls of the victims, including Guzeppi Bajada from Xaghra.

Following the Mass, there will be a walk from the Basilica to the memorial of Guzeppi Bajada in Triq Bullara, where at 11am, the laying of wreaths will take place.

This is the location of the original dwelling of Guzeppi Bajada, one of the victims who lost his life on that day.

On the 7th of June 1919, riots, precipitated by the economic state of Malta post-World War I, resulted in the death of four civilian protesters, including one from Xaghra, Gozo, following shootings by British servicemen.

On that fateful day the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island.

The commemorative activity on Sunday, the 7th of June, is organised by the Xaghra Local Council and the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.
