The stories covered in this weeks issue are:
1. Mariella Vella who hails from Victoria, Gozo has been appointed First Officer with Malta’s official carrier Air Malta plc.
Born to Anthony and Alice nee’Dimech, Mariella, received her education at the Victoria Primary School and later at the Victoria Girls’ Secondary School in Gozo. She then attended a two year post secondary course at the Sir M’Ang Refalo Centre for Further Studies also in Gozo.
Following a semester in B.Engineering (Hons) at the University of Malta, she embarked on a twelve month aviation course at the Oxford Aviation Academy in the UK and a six month training course in Goodyear, Phoenix, USA. Through her training, twenty one year old Mariella achieved her Commercial Pilot’s Licence and the Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (CPL ME/IR) and the MCC/JOC.
Mariella is the first Gozitan female having a commercial pilot licence and has now joined other male Gozitan pilots flying Air Malta’s fleet.
2. Several teachers and parents from the Sacred Heart Minor Seminary recently helped in cooking figolli at the school’s newly refurbished kitchen. This activity is aimed at raising funds to finance various projects within the same school.
3. A 90-strong youth choir and a ten-piece band are being set up by KDZ (Diocesan Youth Commission) Malta and KDZ Gozo in connection with Pope’s meeting with youth on the 18th April 2010, at the Valletta Waterfront. These youth will be animating the crowd between 4.30pm and 5.15pm in preparation for Pope’s arrival. The much-anticipated meeting with the Pope shall then take place from 5.15pm to 6.15pm, whereby the same group shall be singing.
All hymns and songs chosen for the occasion are locally composed. The choir’s wish is to get the crowd to join in the singing. Therefore, anyone wishing to listen to and learn these songs can do so by visiting popeyouthchoir.org. The choir and band are being coordinated by Ms Dorienne Portelli and Mr Richard Grech from KDZ Gozo.
4. Marking the Catholic feast of the Annunciation of Our Lord, when the Church celebrates Christ’s conception in His Mother’s womb following her “yes” to God in Nazareth, Dar Guzeppa Debono invited the public to a conference on Napro Technology, on Sunday the 21st of March, at 10.00am, at the entrance hall of the Lunzjata Valley, Gozo.
Dr Margaret Spiteri, a Gozitan gynaecologist and main exponent of this new “technology” which helps married couples using the natural method of conception, delivered the talk. Napro Technology respects the moral and ethical principles held by the teachings of the Catholic Church promoting life in its fulness. H.L. Mgr Mario Grech, bishop of Gozo, led those present in a prayer to Our Lady at the chapel dedicated to her in Lunzjata, which is just a few steps away from the hall.
5. Dar Guzeppa Debono, a Gozitan entity promoting life, this year marks its 25th anniversary, with varous celebrations addressed to all categories of society and life in general.
