The Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) participated in the State of the Nation, the annual national conference organised by the Office of the President.
The sixth annual edition was held at the Verdala Palace under the patronage of President Myriam Spiteri Debono and discussed the future of Malta’s population, society and national identity in 50-years time.
The GRDA was represented by Mr Juergen Attard, who shared his vision for Gozo over the next 50 years. His contribution focused on the importance of taking a long-term approach to Gozo’s development, recognising that the decisions, investments and priorities of today will shape the island inherited by future generations.
While acknowledging the importance of economic and infrastructural development, Mr Attard emphasised that Gozo’s future must ultimately be centred on people and quality of life. This requires creating quality jobs, attracting talent and investment, and strengthening connectivity, innovation and resilience, while safeguarding Gozo’s environment, heritage, communities and distinctive character.
The central message from the Mr Attard of the GRDA was clear – ”Gozo must continue to develop without losing what makes it unique. Progress should be measured not only by what we build, but also by what we choose to protect.”
As Mr Attard stated during his intervention, “the future of Gozo is being built today. The choices we make today will determine whether, 50 years from now, future generations will inherit a stronger, more sustainable and more liveable Gozo, an island they remain proud to call home.”
