Community-based free Animal First Aid course to be held in Qala

Free Animal First Aid courses have been announced – an initiative organised through a collaboration between the Parliamentary Secretariat for Animal Welfare and the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works.

In Gozo, the course will be held in Qala on the 16th of October, between 3pm and 7pm and will cover residents from Qala, Xaghra and Gharb.

Other sessions will be held in various localities across Malta.

Launched by the Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Welfare, Alicia Bugeja Said, together with the Minister for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, this initiative aims to bring practical training directly into communities and further raise awareness regarding animal protection and welfare.

The courses will provide basic, practical training on how to respond to animal-related emergencies, including cases of choking, animal CPR, wound care, and poisoning. The objective is to equip participants with the necessary skills to administer first aid safely and immediately until veterinary assistance can be obtained.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli stated that this initiative brings practical training and basic knowledge regarding animal first aid closer to communities, while encouraging more residents to be prepared to respond in an emergency.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said noted that through these courses, the Government is continuing to invest not only in animal welfare but also in education and awareness within communities.

“When an animal is in an emergency situation, the first few minutes can be crucial. Through these courses, we aim to equip people with practical knowledge that helps them act safely and responsibly until the necessary veterinary assistance is provided. The more we educate and provide people with the necessary tools, the more we strengthen a culture of responsibility, care, and respect towards animals,” said Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said.
