The Student Councils Democracy Awards, an initiative that encourages students to become more involved in school life and provides them with the opportunity to actively contribute to improving their school communities, have been organised by Agenzija Zghazagh.
A total of 32 secondary schools participated in this edition. During the ceremony, 12 schools received a Gold Award, 15 schools received a Silver Award and five schools received a Bronze Award.
Agenzija Zghazagh explained that these awards recognise the commitment of schools and the work of their student councils in strengthening democratic participation in school life.
The programme places student councils at the centre of student participation, providing youths with a space to express their views, propose ideas and work together to implement initiatives that address the needs of students within their schools.
Through this process, students have the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, responsibility and active citizenship skills, while learning the value of dialogue and democratic decision-making.
As part of this initiative, Agenzija Zghazagh said that it provides practical support to participating student councils through an initial grant per council, alongside practical resources, training and guidance throughout the school year. This support helps students turn their ideas into concrete initiatives that improve their school experience and strengthen their involvement in the school community.
Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Omar Farrugia emphasised the importance of ensuring that youths have meaningful opportunities to express themselves and participate in decisions that affect them. The Minister stated that these initiatives continue to prepare youths to become the leaders of tomorrow.
“Democracy is not learnt from books alone; it is experienced through participation, dialogue and working together. Student councils give youths the opportunity to take initiative, represent their peers and see how their ideas can bring about positive change within their schools,” the Minister said.
He thanked the students, coordinators, educators, school administrations and parents who contribute to this process, while encouraging students to continue using their voices to make a positive difference in their communities.
Agenzija Zghazagh Chief Executive Jason Zammit highlighted that the Agency’s work remains focused on encouraging and empowering young people of all ages to participate actively in society. He emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for youths to express themselves, contribute to their communities, and play an active role in shaping the society in which they live.
