The stories covered in this weeks issue are:
1. On the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows at St James church, Victoria, Bishop, Mgr. Mario Grech celebrated Mass on the church parvis, after which he led a Penitential procession, with the statue of to Our Lady of Sorrows, in the main streets of Victoria.
The annual street-bound Passion play L-Imsallab fi Triqatna organised by L-Ghaqda Dilettanti Gimgha l-Kbira – Ghawdex, was held on Saturday, 20th March. This year marked the tenth anniversary of the group’s first passion play in the streets of Victoria in the year 2000. Throughout the years this pageant continued to be enriched with new costumes, props and participants under the direction of George J Cassar.
The pageant’s main roles are very aptly brought to life by some of Gozo’s best actors namely Gordon J Grech in the role of Jesus Christ, Jamie Camilleri as Malchus, Carmel Camilleri as Pontius Pilate, Franco Azzopardi as Herod, Carmel Theuma as Peter, Josmar Saliba as John, Joseph Tabone as Annas and Saviour Cremona as Caiaphas. This year we also saw the debut of Nicholas Vella in the role of Judas Iscariot and Ruth Portelli as Mary together with Lara M. Cutajar in the part of the Veronica. A group of actors from Haz-Zebbug’s St Philip Band Club and Roman Soldier groups from Hal Luqa also took part together with a multitude of other extras as the crowd, Jewish and Roman soldiers.
The activity which started from the Oratory Don Bosco proceeded through the streets of Victoria where different episodes of the last days of Christ were acted out in various stations culminating in the Sanhedrin process and trial before Pilate in Republic Street and the Crucifixion just beneath the Citadel bastions. The members of the large audience present, composed of Gozitans, Maltese and foreigners, followed the scenes attentively moving from one scene to the other.
2. A Last Supper Exhibition was held at the St. Francis Church, Victoria, during this year’s Holy week. Besides the usual table full of food, fruits and herbs prevalent in Jewish biblical tradition, one was also invited to move among a golgota of 200 clay figures, all created by the volunteers.
