The Budget speech raises more questions than it answers – PN

The Budget presented by the Government yesterday raises more questions than it answers. This was stated by Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia and Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott during a Nationalist Party press conference.

They stated that the main measures affecting third-country nationals and tourism were announced without an explanation of their purpose or how the revenue they generate will be spent.

The spokespersons said that, ”after basing the country’s economy on foreign workers for 13 years, the Government has now delivered a shock to businesses that depend on these workers. This Government went from throwing the doors wide open to everyone to suddenly pulling the handbrake, without providing any clear direction.”

They maintained that, while the Nationalist Party fully supports pension increases and assistance with the cost of living, this Budget completely left out education, health and infrastructure, and failed to provide clear direction on how it will help businesses become stronger.

The spokespersons explained how several measures will ultimately impose new burdens and costs on businesses and, in turn, on the public.

They said that, before the election, ”the PN was the only party to put forward a clear population plan through an authority made up of experts. This authority would hold ongoing consultations on the investment required, working with the private sector to develop a policy that provides stability and direction and eases the challenges created by the Government itself.”
