A beautification and infrastructural improvement project has been inaugurated at Trejqa fi Triq il-Ghajn, in Fontana, by Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, together with Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli.
The project, which represents a total investment of nearly €250,000, has enhanced the area, with particular attention given to rainwater management.
Minister Clint Camilleri stated, “this project is a clear example of our commitment to continue investing in initiatives that improve the quality of life for the people of Gozo. What began as a beautification project evolved into a significant infrastructural intervention; it has not only enhanced the local environment but also addressed challenges related to rainwater management and the protection of residents.”
He added that ”through collaboration between the Ministries and the Local Council, we have successfully carried out the necessary works, ensuring that the investment in this project yields concrete, long-term benefits. We will continue working to ensure that Gozo possesses a more modern, safe, and sustainable infrastructure.”
He maintained that ”through concrete action and continuous investment, this Government is continuing to build a more modern, safe, and sustainable Gozo, where the quality of life of residents remains a priority.”
Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli stated that this project reflects the Government’s commitment to continue investing in the improvement of local infrastructure, while addressing the specific challenges and needs of residents.
She said that, ”we are committed to carrying out projects that go beyond mere beautification, offering concrete solutions for our communities. This project demonstrates how, through coordinated efforts between the Government and Local Councils, we are building safer, more resilient, and sustainable infrastructure – an investment focused on the needs of the people and the future of our localities.”
The Minister further emphasised that the Government will continue to prioritise projects that enhance the urban environment and strengthen community infrastructure across the country.
Mayor of Fontana, Thomas Mizzi, expressed his satisfaction with the inauguration of the regeneration project, which was made possible through funding from various ministries.
“This project has not only given this alley a new look, but has also addressed significant infrastructural challenges. A substantial investment was made in an underground drainage system, ensuring that rainwater – which previously flowed across the surface of the alley – now flows underground, thereby reducing risks for residents,” the Mayor explained.
He added that the project was designed to complement the traditional features of the Maltese houses in the area, while preserving the alley’s historical character.
In addition to the beautification works, the project included the construction and extension of rainwater channels, the installation of railings, the construction of staircases and additional steps, as well as painting and wall-cleaning works.
