The Cove – Film exposing the cruelty & captivity of dolphins

A landmark documentary “The Cove,” winner of the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary 2009, is being screened at Eden Cinemas at 6.30pm on April 27th 2010. This free event is being organised by Nature Trust (Malta) as part of its on-going activities celebrating Global Cetacean Day.

This documentary vividly portrays the on-going and wilful human threat to the wild dolphin populations that roam free along the coast of a small fishing town called Taiji in southern Japan.

Everyone is invited to view this film because it exposes the clandestine, violent killing of wild dolphins that result in 23,000 deaths every year. You will see how a team of specialised individuals came together because of one man, Ric O’Barry, to record atrocities that continue to take place in this tranquil, remote bay, so that the world can learn of what is happening.

Ric O’Barry became famous in the 1960s for capturing and training the five dolphins that played Flipper on the hugely successful TV show of the same name. But after Kathy, the main “Flipper,” died in his arms, Ric O’Barry changed forever and he began an uncompromising crusade to free captive dolphins all over the world.

The Cove is intended to challenge its audiences to question the actions of others; those actions that hide away the uncomfortable truths that affect the decisions we take in ordinary life.

Donations can be made towards Nature Trust (Malta)’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on the night.

The evening will commence promptly at 6.30pm and guests are requested to take their seats in good time.
