2010 will be the year of gypsies and toreadors amidst whom Carmen shall stand out in an impressive and distinctive manner. Gozo’s Aurora theatre has earmarked another all-time classical favourite by French composer Georges Bizet.
Carmen tells the tale of a frivolous gypsy who gets herself caught in between love affairs, one of which eventually shall be the cause of her fate. The news of Carmen was met with a positive energy from the general public as the Aurora theatre announced the title shortly before last year’s sold-out performance of Aïda.
Carmen for 2010 was indeed good news for the opera patrons and it is pretty evident that the French language did not deter any of the aficionados. Indeed it maintains the magic and radiance of the plot as it unfolds on Malta’s largest indoor stage. In any case, Bizet’s music, coupled with the most effective blend of costumes, scenes and props as we are now used to see at the Aurora, pledges an unforgettable experience.
In view of the Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana event, the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora will be open for public viewing and guided tours on Saturday, the 15th of May. Patrons who buy their tickets for Carmen by the end of May, are now being given a €10.00 discount. This offer applies only for tickets bought from the theatre’s booking office in Gozo.
Carmen’s production team has already confirmed the able hands of resident conductor Colin Attard who shall lead the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Scenery and artistic direction shall be once again entrusted to Novella Tabili whose key input in last year’s Aïda received strong critical acclaim. The main cast together with the other household names in the production team shall be announced shortly as the last names are in the process of being confirmed.
Carmen will be performed [1] at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora, Victoria, Gozo, on Saturday October 16th 2010 with tickets being sold for €70, €60 and €45.
