The Malta Standards Authority (MSA) would like to remind importers and retailers that laser pointer products being sold as toys and similar articles are banned from the market as they pose a serious risk to consumers. These laser pointers come in various shapes and sizes. Several types and makes of lasers have been identified during inspections carried out by MSA at retail outlets.
Laser pointers of this type found on the market have been found to be of the Class III type, making them dangerous to consumers as they may cause partial or even permanent blindness. Hence their importation and placing on the market is being prohibited.
Retailers having these products on their shelves are requested to remove same with immediate effect and return them to their supplier.
Importers are to make arrangements for these laser pointers to be withdrawn from the market with immediate effect.
Any retailer and/or importer who is found to be placing these laser pointers on the market will be liable to legal action to enforce the ban.
Consumers are also advised not to use these laser pointers and to return them to the place of purchase. Parents should also advise their children to refrain from using these laser pointers.

I can honestly attribute my partial blindness since that day while sitting quietly on a bench at Xlendi Bay in Gozo at around 11pm three kids were fooling around with a new toy that had just came in the market; the Laser pointer.
It was very annoying to my eyes and I stood up and ran after the kids who were at the other side of the road. I got to them and confiscated the toy, but they had others and continued to annoy other people. I wish I could sue the makers for all the discomfort I had these last years and for the lesser life I will have for the rest of my life.
