Alternatttiva Demokratika – The Green Party stepped up its campaign for the introduction of divorce by writing directly to all members of Parliament, inviting them to start debating divorce in Parliament. Earlier this month, AD wrote to the Social Affairs Committee within Parliament on the subject.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said, “AD has invited all members of Parliament to start debating divorce in Parliament. Lack of action from Nationalist and Labour prliamentarians will only confirm that they are either cut off from reality of thousands of people who require this basic civil right, or else that they are not ready to discuss the issue. In addition, lack of action from Labour parliamentarians will also confirm either that Labour is trying taking everyone for a ride with its ‘free vote’ proposal. All those who require the right to divorce deserve to be given a sound reason which explains the shying away of parliamentarians from discussing this basic civil right.”
Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, AD Spokesperson for Civil Rights, added, “It is shameful that parliament has not yet commenced debating a basic civil right such as divorce. PN and PL are doing a big disservice to all those who would like to get married again. Hence, in spite of their rhetoric on the family, the PN and PL duopoly are excluding people from getting married.”
