NSO statistician, Eusebio Bezzina, seconded to Eurostat

The National Statistics Office is seconding a statistician to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Commission. Mr Eusebio Bezzina, 25, was nominated by Mr Michael Pace Ross, NSO Director General, earlier this year for the post. He will be Malta’s first seconded national expert from the NSO and will be based in Luxembourg.

Mr Bezzina joined the NSO in November 2002 as an airport survey interviewer within the Tourism Statistics unit. After achieving a Diploma in Economics from the University of London in 2006, he was appointed to supervise and co-ordinate a team of survey interviewers.

Concurrently, he progressed with his studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science as an external student, reading for a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Management. He graduated in 2008. In February last year, Mr Bezzina was appointed to the post of Statistician and assigned to the Price Statistics unit. His tasks included organising and carrying out consumer price surveys related to the compilation of Purchasing Power Parities (PPP). He furthered his studies on a distance-learning basis with Edinburgh’s Herriot-Watt University and obtained an M.Sc. in Human Resource Management.

Mr Bezzina will be assigned with Eurostat’s Labour Market Unit. He was selected after sitting for an interview in Luxembourg last July and his first day in his new post at Eurostat will be on 18 October 2010.
