The Ministry for Gozo has said in a statement today that results of technical tests have confirmed that there is no danger of contamination from the material made from asbestos which still remains in some of the corridors at the Gozo Hosptial. The tests were carried out in line with health and safety procedures established in the United Kingdom.
Similar tests are requested by the Ministry for Gozo each time it is necessary to carry out structural works or maintenance in the Gozo Hospital. This is to ensure the health protection of employees, as well as those who have to visit the hospital. The Ministry said that to date, the ceiling in the halls and treatment areas have all been replaced and it is now only a few corridors that still remain unchanged.
The statement said that the work connected with the process of replacement of this material requires specific procedures to ensure full health protection at any time and it involves considerable expense. Another call for bids has recently been issued to remove what remains of the old ceiling in some corridors.
