Government urged to take stand on Libya situation – AD

Government urged to take stand on Libya situation - ADAlternattiva Demokratika, The Green Party said that the Maltese government should take the initiative with its EU partners to take a stand on the serious situation in Libya. AD expressed its solidarity with the democratic non-violent forces which are calling for change in Libya.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokatika Spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, stated, “According to reports by Amnesty International, by Friday evening over 45 people were killed in Libya. It would seem that Benghazi Airport has been occupied by the Anti-Gadaffi demonstrators and that the third largest city in Libya, Beida, in Cyrenaica, has been taken over by the people demonstrating against the dictatorial Libyan regime.”

Prof Cassola continued, “Unfortunately, it seems that the Libyan authorities are using disproportionate force against the people. On the other hand, some have reacted by hanging three policemen loyal to the Gaddafi regime. Violence is to be condemned, whatever part it comes from.”

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, stated, “The PN and the PL should wake up from their multi-decennial servile attitude towards Muammar Gaddafi and condemn all acts of violence, which are totally unacceptable, whilst spurring the EU to make its voice heard.”

“AD expresses its solidarity with the democratic non-violent forces in Libya and in neighbouring countries were people are calling for political change,” added Briguglio.
