Xlendi guided walks as part of Sports Events Scheme 2011

Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue, has launched the ‘Trekking Trips’ organised by the Xlendi Administrative Committee as part of the Sports Events Scheme 2011

Everyone is invited to attend the activities of trekking, or coastal walks on Xlendi cliffs, as part of an initiative for increased physical activity, which the Parliamentary Secretary stressed is important in helping to reduce diseases such as heart disease and high blood cholesterol.

The Parliamentary Secretary praised the initiative of the Xlendi Management Committee, saying that these walks will be a great advertisment for the beauty of the countryside and cliffs around the area. He said another benefit is that they are taking place over the Easter weekend when thousands of Maltese are enjoying a short holiday in Gozo.

The walks will be on Saturday, the 23rd and Sunday, the 24th of April, beginning soon after noon. One of the walks will start from the front of Xlendi Tower, with a visit to the tower, a walk over the cliffs of Sanap, the Bardan and Ta ‘Cenc and ends at Mgarr ix-Xini. Another route will go from Xlendi, to Dwejra, along the cliff to Ghoroba, Wied Sansun, St George Stone, the lake of San Raflu, visiting the tower at Dwejra. Transport back to Xlendi will be provided.

The walks will be guided by qualified Nature Trust personnel. The flora and fauna of the area will be discussed along the way. The walks are free but everyone who visits the towers will be asked to donate two Euro. The money raised will be used for the maintenance of these historic places.

It is suggested that those people who wish to participate in these walks should wear light clothing and shoes suitable for rock walking.

The places in the groups for these walks are limited and those interested should reserve their places by completing an application form on request from munxar.lc@gov.mt [1].

For more information please contact the offices of the Munxar Local Council on 21558755 or email on munxar.lc@gov.mt [2].

A few days before the walks participants will receive an email with more details from the Council.

This is a really super idea. The only problem that I foresee is that both proposed routes are very popular with hunters and trappers.
I have recently done both walks – before the spring hunting season started – and at times we were shouted at by several trappers. Maybe we were on their land, I don’t know, however it was not pleasant. We also came across several dead swallows and sparrows along the way.
I would therefore suggest that before going on these treks that the paths are checked thoroughly.
