Heritage Malta’s museums opening during Birgufest 2011

Heritage Malta will this weekend be offering the public visitng Birgufest an opportunity to visit the Inquisitor’s Palace and the Malta Maritime Museum at a reduced price of €2, both museums included.

Several events organised by Heritage Malta will be held within these two museums throughout the Birgufest weekend. On Friday evening, the Malta Maritime Museum will organise an event entitled ‘The Liquid Shark Tooth,’ during which animators will be ‘cooking’ potions and serving them to children and accompanying adults present. Those daring enough to prepare their own potion can purchase a ticket for this event at the price of €5 that also includes entrance to both museums.

The Malta Maritime Museum has over 2,000 square meters of exhibition space. It is the largest museum in Malta and has chronological displays charting the maritime history of Malta starting from the Roman period to the British period with a lot of material from the Navy of the Order of St John. Apart from the permanent display, this museum will also be hosting two exhibitions: a German Maps Exhibition that includes maps of the Maltese Islands by German map makers, and a Maritime themed exhibition by the artist Thomas J. Burnell entitled ‘Exhibition of Marine Art.’

The Inquisitor’s Palace, also hosting Heritage Malta’s Ethnography Section, is one of the very few surviving examples of a style of palace that would have been found all over Europe and South America in the early modern period. During the Birgufest weekend, those visiting the Inquisitor’s Palace will be guided during their visit by the newly launched visitor’s flow that was recently set-up within the museum.

The National Museum of Ethnography within Heritage Malta, and the Birgu Local Council, with the support of Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue, will also organise a unique festival of traditional Maltese games on Sunday between 14:00 and 18:00hrs. This event will be held on the streets of Birgu and within the Inquisitor’s Palace as part of Birgufest programme. This festival aims to engage children and parents alike in the revival of games that for decades enlivened the streets of the islands’ towns and villages.

The Malta Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace will be open for Birgufest everyday from nine in the morning. Both museums will close on Friday at mid-night, on Saturday at 01:00am, and on Sunday at 22:00pm.
