The Down Syndrome Association organised a conference on Saturday on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
The event was held at the Ministry for Gozo Exhibition Hall, St Francis Square, Victoria.
The welcome address was made by Ms Marthese Mugliette, President of the Down Syndrome Association, this was followed by the opening address given by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. The conference continued with the speakers Dr Isabella Borg, Dr Andrew Azzopardi and Dr Jean Paul Grech. A discussion with the audience took place after a break. The closing address was made by Dr Justyne Caruana, Labour Party Spokesperson for Family and Equality. The Chairperson was John Peel.
The Down Syndrome Association is a voluntary Non Governmental Organisation. It was founded in 1981 with its main aim to support parents of persons who have Down syndrome.
Parents who enroll with the Association are given any required support they might need from the very start of their baby’s life. From information pack to specialized visits on request, the Association gives the chance of friendship and socialization to its children, members and their families but most of all helping people who have Down syndrome to live a full and rewarding life.
Apart from supporting the families and their members, the Association also works on issues which directly relate to its members’ needs – health, education, employment, independent living and so much more. These issues are being continuously addressed by the Association, taking such issues straight to authorities for the full benei t of children who have Down syndrome. The Association aims to raise more awareness on this condition and also to help make a better world for our children.
