Arriva has launched its Road Safety Campaign for the month of December. The campaign, which has been developed with the help and collaboration of the Malta Police Force was launched at a press conference held at the Pembroke Park & Ride this morning, and address by Arriva Managing Director Keith Bastow with the participation of Senior Superintendent Martin Bayliss, from the Traffic Branch/Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) Section of the Malta Police Force.
“Safety is always high on Arriva’s agenda, and as the operator of the public transport service in Malta and Gozo the first scenario we must look at is the road. Our buses are only a few of the vehicles on Maltese and Gozitan roads and we must all be aware of the responsibilities we have when we get behind the wheel, and the consequences that a moment’s distraction can have when we are on the road,” said Mr Bastow.
Arriva launched its first Health and Safety Campaign internally during the month of November. This was targeted at Arriva employees and comprised a number of initiatives aimed at ensuring that health and safety awareness remains at the top of the company’s agenda.
Following the successful implementation of the first (internal) phase, Arriva decided to enlarge the scope of its Health and Safety campaign, and with advice and collaboration from the Malta Police Force is now taking its road safety message out on the streets.
The newly launched Health and Safety Campaign targets all motorists and vehicles on Maltese roads, especially during the month of December and the Christmas period, when motorists might be somewhat more distracted than usual. It comprises three main messages that Arriva devised with the help of the Malta Police Force to target three major causes of road accidents, namely drink driving, using the mobile phone while driving and speeding.
As part of this campaign large posters which will be featuring on Arriva buses urging motorists to consider the implications of their actions and keep in mind how dangerous and serious the consequences of engaging in unsafe driving might be for pedestrians, others on the road, for a person’s loved ones and for motorists themselves.
