A study launched at a conference at the University campus in Gozo today by the Gozo University Group (GUG) gives a clear indication that Gozitan youths of today have determination and although many of them are living independently, still cherish the value of family and religion as well as the beauty of the island.
The study was conducted among 405 students who represent 39% of all Gozitan students currently pursuing their studies in Malta. These include about 1,000 who are on courses at the University of Malta together with nearly 200 attending other centres such as MCAST and ITS Malta.
The survey included questions closely related to personal aspects affecting the students lives and 89% of them said that they choose to stay along with their friends in apartments in Malta during weekdays and return to Gozo at weekends.
The other 11% cross between the two islands daily or regularly. The questions were divided into six sections which included: studies; Transport – either by sea and land, Housing, Benefits and Expenditure; Participation in Activities and General questions.
In the opening address of the conference, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, thanked GUG for carrying out the study and its commitment to working proactively for the Gozitan students in Malta.
The Minister also said that from this year assistance given to Gozitan students studying in Malta would be increased to €400 every three months. The allowance was to be issued to all Gozitan students without distinction.
