Microchipping and dog tags compulsory from the 30th April

As from the 30th of April 2012, all dogs over the age of four months must be microchipped, registered with the Government Livestock database and have a license issued.

The Malta Veterinary Association said that “all warranted veterinarians in Malta are authorised to carry out the insertion of microchips and registration in dogs. Owners will receive the license by post.”

Part of the new legal notice also states that “the owner or keeper of a dog must also ensure that the dog wears a tag or a badge bearing the owner’s or keeper’s telephone number and it must be worn at all times when the dog is in a public place.”

The old law requiring an annual license for dogs no longer applies.

For full information on the legal notice please see here [1].

Dog owners in Gozo are able to get hand engraved tags from the Gozo SPCA for only € 3, incl postage within the Maltese Islands.

They have 3 shapes of tag (disc, bone and heart), 3 sizes (S,M,L) and they come in pink, purple, gold, silver, blue and red -most combinations of the above available, but not silver disc (M,L), or red bones. Tags will also be available to purchase at the Gozo SPCA ‘Open morning’ on Sunday, the 29th of April.

For more information on the tags available or to place an order, please email info@spca-gozo.org [2].

That`s still not enough to control pets in Malta.
“The old law requiring an annual license for dogs no longer applies.” Why may I ask? Is it votes before taxes? Income generated from fees and charges can go towards pounds and organizations like the SPCA .Local councils control the annual registration of pets Down Under.
