The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has in a statement this afternoon referred to concerns being raised by the St Julian’s residents association about construction in St Julian’s.
MEPA said that the residents association has stated that 9 major projects in St Julian’s are being planned, and that these 9 proposals should be put on hold until studies are carried out.
The Authority would like to clarify that, “of the 9 proposals being mentioned, two applications are suspended as they were not deemed acceptable as currently proposed and no reply has been forthcoming from architect, namely PA 7035/07 and PA 3110/07. Another application PA 4851/07 is also not deemed acceptable as currently proposed.”
“A further two proposals require changes to the Local Plan before being considered. One of these proposals PA 1852/10 was submitted by the St Julian’s Local Council and is being discussed with their representatives. In the second case, an application (planning control PC 3/12) for a minor amendment to the local plan has been submitted and a number of comments were received by MEPA during the six-week public consultation period. A traffic impact statement was also conducted in this latter case and the related application is awaiting the determination of the planning control application.”
“Another proposal (tracking no 145129) is to embellish and pedestrianise Spinola square, which will also require a traffic impact statement. Furthermore there is another pending application for the renewal of (PA 6214/06) which is awaiting validation.” MEPA said
“Finally,” MEPA continued, “two of the proposals are to be considered by the Board, that is a proposal with 21 apartments at Villa Frieres (PA 856/02), and a proposed extension to the Portomaso complex (PA 4096/08) with 46 new units.”
The Authority said that it is evaluating the situation in line with environmental and planning regulations, and will make its conclusions known as soon as possible.
