Twenty abstract paintings by Gozitan artist John Grima are currently on exhibition at the Presidents’ Gallery at the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. The Berlaymont Building in Rue de Loi is the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels
The exhibition entitled ‘Beyond Space’ was inaugurated on 4th September by Commissioner John Dalli in the presence of a number of Maltese and foreign guests. The newly appointed Permanent Representative of Malta to the EU, Ambassador Marlene Bonnici also delivered an address during the inauguration ceremony.
The Exhibition will remain open until the end of September.
The same exhibition was previously on show at the Jean Monnet Building, the main EU Commission building in Luxembourg, between 1st July and 30th August.
A catalogue featuring the twenty paintings together with a foreword by Commissioner John Dalli and a critical appreciation by Ms Lisa Gwenn Baldacchino was printed for the occasion.
Works by John Grima, who has a studio in Munxar, have been published in a number of renowned art reviews including the international art book 1001 Reasons to Love the Earth organised by the 2000 Foundation of the Netherlands . A book entitled ‘The Art of John Grima Paintings 1992-2002’ was published in 2004.
John is a painter, sculptor and designer. His sculptures for public places include the Nativity for Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary and a number of bronze sculptures including a family group, the portals at St George’s Basilica, a sculpture commemorating the 25 th anniversary of the Federation of European Carnival Cities, a mother and daughter for a main road in Gozo, and recently a concrete sculpture for San Lawrenz.
His works are to be found in a number of local churches. He has also created sets for opera, stage productions and the leading song festivals in Malta.
