A project involving the installation of a ‘shared computing’ system at the Gozo National Library was recently completed by Smart Technologies Ltd.
The system, successfully installed over the past months, operates through the concept of Windows Multipoint Server, and allows members of the public using the computer system at the library to utilise the current computer system in a more energy-efficient manner since the system takes the excess power of a computer and shares it across multiple end users.
“We were delighted to have had this opportunity to work at Gozo’s National Library through this project that will help leverage the efficiency in the library’s daily operations,” said Chris Demicoli, Business Development Manager at Smart Technologies.
“Thanks to this system, which allows multiple users to access the same date stored on one computer, those visiting the Gozo Public Library will be able to enjoy more flexibility and a faster and more efficient service by being able to access the archives from any of the monitors that form part of this system,” explained Mr Demicoli.
The concept of ‘shared computing’ is possible thanks to the advanced and greater power of today’s computer technology. Before, personal computers were designed to be simple and used by individuals whereas servers were powerful enough to handle the computing needs of many individuals in an organization, but needed skilled IT professionals to run them.
Today’s personal computers have become so powerful that they can deliver quality graphics and video and still have excess power to spare. Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 leverages the excess power of a PC and turns it into a server capable of powering multiple computing sessions at once. It’s the software operating system that runs each end user’s personalized Windows 7 “session” on the host computer. It then delivers a “virtual desktop” experience via the access devices to each end user working on their own monitor, keyboard and mouse. More importantly, it is also easy to install and manage.

can work continue in the lending library. It seems to be at a standstill with about 70% of the fiction not available. Also can some repair work be done on the existing books. as a second comment; recently the reference library started collecting personal information about their visitors, re., name address, id card no and a SIGNATURE. The staff are unable to or unwilling to give a reason for this collection of personal data. their comment is that it is for their records….very well but what do they do with the records?.. The freedom of information bill and the Data Protection laws should surely come into this. Also if a computer is required then all the information has to be given again on another FORM. Last of all this new registration requirement seems to have started when a new library manager was appointed
