Nature Trust Malta, as the local coordinators of Eco-Schools International hosted the National Operators Meeting from 7th to 11th November in Mellieha. Around 70 delegates coming from 50 countries registered for the conference and on their 1st day a group of about 30 delegates visited the Red Tower, which was kept open especially for them by Din l-Art Helwa. They were accompanied by Vince Attard and Jeffrey Sciberras of Nature Trust.
As it was quite late the delegates were taken straight up to the roof to enjoy the incredible views and take photos. They were rewarded by a magnificent sunset. The history of the Tower, embedded as it is in the history of Malta and the Knights, fascinated the delegates, as did the views and they eagerly asked many questions.
For those of them who came from landlocked countries such as Mongolia, the idea of being an island and being able see the invaders so long in advance and prepare for attack fired their imagination.
As they explained, many emerging countries have little in the way of heritage to show and Malta occupies a very special position in this field.
They thanked Nature Trust delegates effusively for inviting them and were all thrilled with the richly illustrated DLH publication “Walks around the Red Tower.”.
