Civil Works on the first phase of the redevelopment of the present Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex in Victoria, Gozo, are nearing completion and should be finished by end of June 2008. Works during this phase included the demolition of one of the previous playgrounds, a corridor and staircase, excavation works and the building of the first block of the new school. This includes the construction of part of the car park, a substation, a library and 18 classrooms, including resource rooms and other ancillary facilities.
As construction works on the first block are in an advanced stage, tenders in connection with finishing works, such as those relating to tiling and marble works, the supply and fixing of aluminium apertures as well as plastering and painting works have recently been issued by the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools. The first two tenders close on the 30th of May with the one relating to plastering and painting works to be submitted by the 4th of June. Tenders relating to the installation of electrical and plumbing systems are at the adjudicating stage.
This project is being carried out by the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo. The two ministers concerned, the Hon. Dolores Cristina and the Hon. Giovanna Debono, visited the project this morning and were able to assess the works carried out so far. The Ministers were accompanied by the architect in charge of works Mr Andrew Ellul as well as the Head of school, Dr Frank Abela.
The completed school will occupy an area of 3300 square metres with the first phase lying on 1000 square metres of land providing 5000 sq metres of floor space. The finished school will comprise 45 classrooms, 9 Science laboratories, 6 Technology Workshops, 4 Computer labs, Art rooms, Home Economics rooms, Needlework rooms, Graphical Communications rooms, Resource rooms and other modern educational facilities, including career guidance rooms, a Library and open spaces that can be used for school and community purposes. An underground car park will also be constructed while a new road, connecting Europe Street to Fortunato Mizzi Street, will be constructed to enable school transport to have a more secure and safe bay area.
Besides providing secondary school students in Gozo with a modern state-of-the-art school, this ambitious €7 million (Lm3m) infrastructural project will also provide them with safe, attractive and accessible facilities enabling quality learning.
