A Nadur restaurant owner has been charged at the Gozo Courts with defrauding three Chinese Nationals.
Manwel Cassar, 56, from Nadur, plead not guilty to defrauding Guo Hui Zhang, Zhuoyue Chen and Guoshuai Zhangh out of €2,329, misappropriating the money and also creating false documents and using them.
The three Chinese claimed that Mr Cassar told them that he could acquire Maltese citizenship for them and they had given him the money to arrange the citizenship. They also alleged that he had sent them a false letter, purporting to be from the authorities, saying that they had been granted citizenship.
After taking into account the relatively small amount of money involved, Magistrate Miriam Hayman granted Mr Cassar bail against a personal guarantee of €4,000 and a deposit of €400.
Police Inspector Ivan Cilia prosecuted and Dr Joseph Giglio and Dr Stephen Tonna Lowell acted for the defence.
