A new representative voice for Local Councils – PL

PL Leader Dr Joseph Muscat this afternoon presented the Labour Party’s Local Council candidates. Speaking at the presentation he said “a new Government will be committed in giving Local Councils a greater voice and an additional opportunity to represent their constituents. This will serve to reinstate credibility in local administrations and make sure that Councils are on the side of families and businesses, not bureaucracy.”

The Labour Leader went on to say that a new Government will work towards having Local Councils that are in sync with their respective communities. “A new Government will work hand in hand with the local Governments, irrespective of their political majority, in order to be closer to the people.”

“For Local Councils to be able to represent better their communities, a new Government will give them a vote in the case of major projects in their localities,” Dr Muscat said. “This will happen because the Labour Party believes that the role of Local Councils goes beyond ensuring proper infrastructure in their localities. A new Government will give Councils the necessary tools to improve on the local Governments’ social aspect.”

The Labour Party is presenting 197 candidates for Local Council elections; 174 candidates in Malta and 23 in Gozo. 25% of these candidates are women whilst 40% will be contesting elections for the first time. 29% of these candidates are under 35 years of age.
